Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I was out in the sun one morning, mowing the lawn and weed whacking, and I have developed sunburn and blisters. I am concerned because there seems to be a red ring around the burn site, which does not look the same as the other side, even though both sides received the same amount of sun exposure. I have had sunburns before due to my pale skin, but never to this extent. Could you please assist me in determining whether this might be infected or if it should be okay with regular home care?
Thank you in advance for any assistance!
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have reviewed your query and concerns and examined your picture (attachments removed to protect patient's identity). It appears that you have developed severe sunburn. Sunburn is a clinical reaction caused by the acute effects of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) on the skin. In severe cases, such as yours, swelling and blisters may occur. For the treatment, I suggest using a normal saline or a potassium permanganate solution (1:10,000 dilution) compress, or soak to gently clean the affected area. This will help remove serous discharge, crust, and debris while reducing oozing and inflammation. I also suggest applying a combination of Fusidic acid and Betamethasone valerate cream twice daily. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with him or her, and take the medicines with their consent. In your case, it may be necessary to consider systemic oral steroids, so I advise you to consult a dermatologist near you for further evaluation and guidance.
Thank you.
