Is it safe to include artificial sweeteners in the diet for weight loss?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I want to lose weight but I have a sweet tooth. I can not control my sweet cravings. I was thinking of including sugar substitutes. Is it safe to include these sugar substitutes as they are also artificial sweeteners? Can they be toxic? What other sugar alternatives can I try?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query.

It is great that you are focused on losing weight. Sugar substitutes can be a helpful tool in managing sweet cravings, but it is essential to use them in moderation. Artificial sweeteners like sucralose, aspartame, and stevia are generally considered safe when consumed within acceptable limits set by regulatory agencies. While concerns exist, current research does not definitively link them to cancer or major health issues in typical usage. Using sugar substitutes sparingly can aid weight loss efforts, but incorporating natural sugars from fruits can also be a nutritious and satisfying alternative. Remember, balance is key.

Hope this helps you.

Thanks and regards.
