Could a child have an internal head injury from a bed fall?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My son, aged four years and four months, recently fell from a bed and bumped his head on the right side, approximately three to four inches away from his right ear. He has a small bump as a result of the fall. He cried briefly immediately after the incident but then returned to his normal state. There has been no bleeding, loss of consciousness, or vomiting in the approximately five hours since the accident.

I am wondering if there is still a possibility of an internal injury, and if so, what signs or symptoms should I be watching for? Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Firstly, please check for any signs of bleeding from the nose, mouth, or ear. Apply an ice pack to the bump on your child's head. Administer the syrup Ibugesic Plus (Ibuprofen), with the appropriate dose based on your child's weight, three times a day for the next three days. In most cases, there should be no cause for significant concern.

Over the next 24 to 48 hours, closely monitor your child for any signs of lethargy, multiple episodes of vomiting, convulsions, or a refusal to feed. If none of these issues arise, there is likely no need to worry.

Regarding the possibility of an internal injury, a CT (Computed tomography) brain (Plain and Contrast) can confirm this. However, if your child is clinically well and does not exhibit any concerning symptoms, a CT scan may not be necessary at this time.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
