What causes recurrent bleeding during pregnancy with discomfort?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 35 years old, and I have experienced one miscarriage at 15 weeks. I am currently 12 weeks pregnant and noticed light bleeding today with dark blood clots. An ultrasound revealed a viable fetus with anterior myometrial contraction. I am also experiencing discomfort on the left side of my lower belly. Urinalysis shows normal results with trace blood. This sudden bleeding episode also occurred last month with a few clots, then stopped. I had a similar issue in a previous pregnancy. I am taking Folic acid supplements. Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern about the bleeding.

Based on your symptoms and test results, it is possible that you are experiencing a subchorionic hemorrhage, a type of bleeding between the embryo and the uterine wall. This may cause discomfort and cramping, especially on one side of the lower belly. The anterior myometrial contraction seen on ultrasound is a normal finding and does not indicate any serious issues.

However, since you mentioned passing clots, it is important to discuss this with your gynecologist. Bed rest and continuing medications to sustain the pregnancy may be recommended. It is important to closely monitor your symptoms and follow up with your healthcare provider as needed.

Additional tests or monitoring may be suggested to ensure the health of both you and your baby. In the meantime, I suggest you prioritize staying hydrated, rest as much as possible, and avoid activities that could cause further discomfort or trauma to the uterus.

I hope I have addressed your concerns.

Thank you.

Regards.
