Why do I get recurrent styes despite using antibiotic drops?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a bad eye stye. I have been using Cloranfenicol ointment and Ciprofloxacin drops for seven days. I used one drop every 12 hours and ointment every night. I saw improvement, but it is coming back. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Well, great that you have diagnosed it as a stye. You have not been treating it effectively. The treatment will be as follows for your case. Hot fomentations for a week, three times a day (not very hot, we do not want to burn your lid). You can use Azithromycin/Vancomycin or Erythromycin antibiotic eye drops. Do not use Chloramphenicol. We need a combined antibiotic and corticosteroid ointment. The best is a Tobramycin and Dexamethasone combination once before you sleep. You can even use it twice when you wake up as well for a week. Maintain lid hygiene. Everyday clean your lid with cotton and shampoo or cleansing soap, then wash three times a day. Your condition will be resolved in five days.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

Do I get a prescription?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

No, you do not need any prescription. All of these medications are over the counter. If there is any problem, I will send you one tomorrow.
