Can antibiotic resistance cause frequent stye?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Three weeks ago, I had an internal stye and my doctor prescribed oral antibiotics. But, in the end, it became a chalazion, plus some pus was drained. Now, the stye is coming back and it itches a lot (I can see a big white spot in my eyelid margin). It is not as bad as it was before, but I am worried. Why is it happening? Is there a chance of antibiotic resistance?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand what you have been going through. Now, as you can see the pus point at the lid margin, it is an external hordeolum or stye. Recurrences can occur with respect to stye. The reasons being multiple. If possible, could you revert back with pictures of your eye so that I could make a more definitive diagnosis? The chances of antibiotic resistance with respect to stye is highly unlikely. Once it is drained, the neighboring Meibomian duct might get inflamed resulting in a stye. However, recurrences are common in diabetics, uncorrected refractive error, and immunocompromised states. Kindly revert back with the picture of your eye.
