How to treat irregular and delayed periods?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have been under a lot of stress. My period has never been regular since I have had one. So I had my period for about five days, and it was fine. Then, out of nowhere, my period gets excessively heavier to where I am stocking up on a few pads at a time. I then had my period for 16 days, and then it still was not stopping. It did not seem to have any signs of it stopping anytime soon. At that time, I was feeling weak. So I went to the ER, she took me into the room and asked me what was going on. So I explained everything from the beginning. She said she was going to put me on Medroxyprogesterone to stop my period and take one tablet for ten days. I went the next day and got blood taken out for a CBC and urinary analysis. She then wanted me to come in for my results. She said that I have iron deficiency anemia and my vitamin D was low, on top of having an infection down there. Also, my liver enzymes were slightly elevated. I finished Medroxyprogesterone. Then, I was put on 55,000 vitamin D for two months, and I take iron pills three times a day. Shortly after that, my period disappeared. I get symptoms of a period like light cramps, on occasion, brown discharge. Then, I get red or pink discharge coming out only sometimes around the time I am supposed to be on my period. I have a white sticky discharge. So it seems I am ovulating, but no blood yet. I heard about taking a pregnancy test for certain cancers and that it detects high levels of hCG. I took it, and it was negative. Plus, they would have found something in the tests they took. Also, I am not sexually active. I was told that that could also be a reason my hormones are all over. I just need a professional's point of view.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Irregular periods are due to hormonal changes, low blood count, or thyroid disorders. Since you have a low blood count, this could be the main reason for irregular periods. The oral iron supplements take almost three months time to increase blood count by 1 gram. So I suggest you continue taking iron supplements daily. Also, follow these suggestions:

1. Take plenty of fluids, vegetables and fruits, iron-rich foods, and iron supplements daily.

2. Avoid stress and strain.

3. Maintain personal hygiene and take plenty of fluids.

4. Wash your private parts with normal tap water every time you use the washroom.

5. Avoid using vaginal douches and creams.

6. Avoid having sex, as it may cause further hormonal changes and increase anxiety.

However, if you have a doubt, then get back to me.

Take care and regards.
