What helps with weight loss in stomach cancer patients?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My sister is suffering from stomach cancer, which is in the fourth stage. She is losing weight day by day and not taking the required food.

Is it fine to put a saline bottle for her for some energy?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

It is better to put in a feeding tube rather than daily saline, for example, a jejunostomy feeding tube. Ask your oncologist about the possibility of putting in a feeding tube. At this stage, her appetite may be very poor. She may not be able to eat well. But saline infusion will not be enough and may occasionally have some complications. It may be beneficial in case of vomiting, low blood pressure, or dehydration. She needs a balanced diet containing proteins, fats, carbohydrates, minerals, and vitamins. That is possible through a feeding tube. If you can send the latest medical reports, I will be able to give some more advice.

I hope this helps.

Kindly revert so I can assist you further.
