Is there any link between sinusitis and hearing issues?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had a stapes surgery five years back for tinnitus and otosclerosis. Initially for the first couple of months post operative everything seemed fairly normal. Then I got sick nine months back with a sinus infection, primary ciliary dyskinesia and doctor said my oxygen and spirometry was low associated with pressure imbalance. I was given antibiotics and allergy medications. Since I got sick a number of times with bronchitis and sinus infection. My hearing has also declined in my right year with increasing tinnitus. I had headache, memory trouble, dizziness and large amount of fatigue. I had a chest X- ray, electrocardiogram and complete blood count test all was normal. I have been on Amoxicillin, Doxycycline, Cephalexin, and Prednisolone. My regular medication is Clonazepam 0.25 - 0.5 mg per day for panic attacks. Mostly concerned about head pressure or headaches, fatigue and cognitive issues related to this issue. Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query. I understand your concerns. First of all let me assure you , your ear surgery is least likely to cause sinusitis. But it can be other way round. Your upper respiratory tract infection can cause problem with hearing. Now can you tell me if you have bilateral disease, in which the ear was operated. Which ear do you have problems now? I hope this has helped you. Thank you.
