Can varicocele surgery improve sperm motility and chances of conceiving?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My husband who is the father of two children has zero progressive sperm motility. His sperm count is 160 million per milliliter, concentration 27 million per milliliter, and normal forms is 15 %. He consulted a doctor and was told that he has grade 2 to 3 varicocele. Is there any relation between varicocele and sperm motility? Will his sperm motility come back to normal range if he undergoes surgery for varicocele? What are the chances of conceiving after the surgery?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

Yes, there is a relationship between varicocele and sperm motility. Varicocele is a condition in which the veins in the scrotum become enlarged, which can cause increased blood flow and heat in the testicles, leading to decreased sperm motility and production. Varicocele surgery, also known as varicocelectomy, is a common treatment for this condition. Many studies have shown that varicocele surgery can improve sperm motility and increase the chances of pregnancy, especially in cases where the varicocele is causing significant infertility issues. However, the success of the surgery in improving sperm motility and the chances of conception will depend on various factors such as the severity of the varicocele, age and fertility of the female partner, or other underlying medical conditions.

I hope this has helped you.

Thank you.
