What methods can be effective in breaking the smoking habit?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 45-year-old woman who has been smoking since my teens. I got the COPD diagnosis, and I am on a mission to kick the smoking habit, as my doctor suggested. I am wondering how much of a game-changer the whole smoking cessation journey is. Any tips on how to make it less bumpy? Also, I am curious about the role of diet and exercise in this process. What kind of symptoms might pop up along the way, and how do I know it is working? This is tougher than I thought. Please help.

Hello,

I appreciate that you have chosen icliniq.com for your medical needs.

I am here to give you the best care possible.

Where there is a will, there is a way. Do not be anxious; ally with the journey, and it will be smooth. Everything will keep falling into place as you go. Keep yourself busy with your profession or passion. Drop the company of people with smoking interests. Make it a holistic approach for a more successful and lasting positive impact. Here are some suggestions:

  1. Take lots of green leafy vegetables and fresh whole fruits.
  2. Gradually start with walking, practicing yoga, and exercising as health permits.
  3. It is advisable to take a dietitian's opinion.
  4. Keep well-hydrated.
  5. Use fidget toys or a pencil in your fingers to occupy the space of a cigarette.
  6. Check vitals.
  7. Regularly follow up with treating doctors.

I hope this has helped you. Please feel free to reach me again, in case of further queries.

Thank you.
