How to treat Sjogren's syndrome?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have dry eyes, morning stiffness, and pain in my hands, legs, back, neck, and mouth sores. Am I suffering from an immune disorder?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query and understood your concern.

Based on your symptoms, you might have Sjogren's Syndrome, which could be associated with rheumatoid arthritis or lupus. This is called mixed connective tissue disorder (MCTD). You would require a test known as ANA (antinuclear antibody test ) or LIA (Linear Immune Assay).

This test would give a conclusion. Then, your treatment with immunosuppressive agents would start.

I hope it helps you.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thanks for your reply.

Would Sjogren's syndrome be mistaken for fibromyalgia?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Fibromyalgia is a diagnosis of exclusion. It means if all your investigations are normal and you have pain at particular sites of fibromyalgia.

If you have ANA positive, then the diagnosis of fibromyalgia is the least likely. If the morning joint stiffness gets relief as the day passes, it is most likely to be rheumatoid arthritis.

Hope it helps you.

Thank you.
