How to treat Loperamide-induced shortness of breath?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am having shortness of breath due to abuse of Loperamide. I have had terrible episodes of breathlessness, to the point of a drowning feeling. Sometimes only rolling over would start an episode. I have not been taking this medicine for the last two weeks. I realize an improvement, and the attacks are not severe. Is there any other remedy that could help speed up my recovery? Please help. Thanks.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com. I understand your concern. You might be having bronchitis episodes now. It causes bouts of coughing with or without sputum and shortness of breath. I advise taking Ventolin Inhaler (Albuterol) two puffs as required for relieving dyspnea. Also, it would help if you did not retake the tablet Loperamide strictly. Take lots of liquids and juices orally. Vitamin C tablets will also help to fasten your recovery. Chest X-Ray and spirometry tests are advised after seeing your family doctor if the cough persists. Kindly consult a specialist, talk with them, and take the medications with their consent. Thank you.
