Why my lips gets parted when I sleep?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My lips get parted when I sleep. I use a plastic retainer which keeps my teeth to be moist. I have white dehydration marks on my front teeth when I wake up. It makes my teeth to look more yellow and ugly. It is happening for years. I also grind my teeth which helps to break my foods into pieces. What can I do now?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern. If you have an anatomically short lip, either you have to do lip augmentation, or you have to wear a teeth guard throughout the life. The associated clenching cannot be due to the short anatomical lip. Your symptoms may occur due to DNS (deviated nasal septum) or nasal obstruction. Please provide your age, weight, and pictures of your closed teeth bite when having lips in a closed position as well as in open position.
