What is the treatment for low libido?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have had a low libido for a few years now, and I finally went to a doctor to get a checkup done. The testosterone level was 278 ng/dL, hemoglobin was 12.3 g/dL (thalassemia minor carrier), and hematocrit was 40.5 %. The doctor has prescribed 50 mg of Clomiphene citrate daily for three months before going back for a retest. I wanted to get a second opinion as I am worried. Also, are there any natural and healthier options or supplements that can help instead of medication? Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concerns about low libido.

First of all, I would like to inform you that rather than total testosterone, free testosterone is a more reliable test to determine the adequacy of the male sex hormone (testosterone). Secondly, stress management should be the priority, as stress itself is the prime cause of low sexual drive.

Reducing financial, social, and occupational stress should be the first intervention before any medication is prescribed for low-sex desire. Thirdly, and most importantly, communicate your concerns with your partner so that you can work your way out of the problem.

Regarding the prescribed medication (Clomiphene), I would like to assure you that there is no problem with its use and that it increases the serum testosterone level. Natural supplements can also be used, including Coenzyme Q, S-adenosyl methionine, Zinc, Vitamin C, and others.

I hope this helps.

Please revert in case of further queries.

Thank you.
