Can Semaglutide treat diabetes completely?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I wanted to ask about my father’s health. He is now 58 years old, and he has been taking Metformin medication since the age of 35. Till now his blood sugar levels have been controlled only with medications. Why is it necessary to take medication for such a long duration? Is this medication not effective in treating diabetes? I have heard about Semaglutide and wanted to know more about it. Is Semaglutide safe and effective? Can it treat diabetes completely? Is there any effective pill available to treat diabetes?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Managing type 2 diabetes often requires long-term medication like Metformin because it is a chronic condition where the body's ability to regulate blood sugar levels is impaired. Metformin helps control blood sugar by improving insulin sensitivity (the body's cells become more responsive to insulin) and decreasing glucose production in the liver, but it does not cure diabetes. The necessity for long-term medication stems from the progressive nature of the disease, and stopping the medication could lead to uncontrolled blood sugar levels, increasing the risk of complications.

As you may have heard, Semaglutide is a newer medication used to manage type 2 diabetes. It is a GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide) receptor agonist that works by enhancing insulin secretion, reducing glucagon release, and slowing gastric emptying, which helps to lower blood sugar levels. Semaglutide has been shown to be effective in controlling blood sugar and promoting weight loss, making it a valuable option for many patients. It is generally considered safe, though it can have side effects, such as nausea and gastrointestinal issues. It is not a cure for diabetes like other diabetic medicines, but it can significantly improve management when combined with lifestyle changes.

While there is no pill that completely cures diabetes, several effective medications can help control the condition. These include Metformin, GLP-1 receptor agonists like Semaglutide, SGLT2 (Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 ) inhibitors, and DPP-4 (Dipeptidyl peptidase 4) inhibitors. The choice of medication depends on individual health profiles and needs.

Make sure your father is getting adequate sleep, does not have other health issues, exercises, and walks regularly for at least 30 minutes a day, and eats balanced meals.

Working closely with your doctor or through online consultation to tailor the treatment plan is essential for effective diabetes management. This approach, including medication, diet, exercise, and regular monitoring, helps maintain blood sugar control and overall health.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards.
