Can Semaglutide help with diabetic neuropathy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have type 2 diabetes mellitus and am about 80 pounds overweight. Recently, I have started experiencing peripheral neuropathy in my feet, which presents as burning and tingling sensations, especially at night. I have been reading about Semaglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist, and understand that it may help with both blood glucose control and weight loss.

I have previously tried medications such as Metformin and insulin therapy, but they did not significantly help with my weight management. My endocrinologist mentioned glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists once but did not follow up on the discussion. I am wondering if Semaglutide might also help with my diabetic neuropathy symptoms. I want to avoid further complications and improve my overall health.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concerns.

Semaglutide helps with blood sugar control and weight loss by increasing insulin secretion and lowering glucagon levels, which in turn reduces blood sugar levels. It promotes significant weight loss, especially in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity. Regarding neuropathy, Semaglutide does not directly treat nerve damage, but it may slow down its progression by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation.

Additionally, weight loss can improve blood flow and nerve function. Semaglutide is considered effective for weight loss because it reduces appetite, making it a better medication for this purpose. Beyond these effects, semaglutide offers other benefits such as kidney protection and heart protection, meaning it can be safely used by patients with heart or kidney conditions.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
