Can scrub typhus cause permanent liver damage?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 42-year-old man recently diagnosed with scrub typhus. After a camping trip, I developed a fever, headaches, muscle pain, and a sore with a scab on my leg. Blood tests revealed low platelet levels and elevated liver enzymes. I have been taking Doxycycline for six days. While the fever has subsided, I still feel very fatigued, slightly dizzy, and experience some joint discomfort. Could this infection have caused lasting damage to my liver or other organs? Should I undergo follow-up tests, and how long will it take to fully recover?

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Scrub Typhus Recovery and Follow-Up: Scrub typhus can temporarily affect organs like the liver, but lasting damage is rare if treated promptly with Doxycycline. Your symptoms of fatigue, dizziness, and joint discomfort are likely part of post-infection recovery.

Recommended Follow-Up Tests:

  1. Liver Function Tests (LFTs): To ensure liver enzyme levels are returning to normal.

  2. Complete Blood Count (CBC): To monitor platelet levels and inflammation recovery.

  3. Kidney Function Tests: To rule out kidney involvement if symptoms persist.

Recovery Timeline:

  1. Most people feel better within two to three weeks, though fatigue may linger longer.

  2. Rest, stay hydrated, and maintain a nutritious diet to support recovery.

Seek immediate medical care if symptoms worsen, such as the onset of jaundice, confusion, or severe dizziness.

Be sure to follow up with your doctor to confirm full recovery and address any lingering issues.

Please let me know if you want some help.

Thank you.
