What are the causes of a bumpy or uneven cervix?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I felt my cervix while checking for a tampon and noticed a small bump and uneven texture on one side. I do not usually check my cervix, but now I am anxious after reading on the internet about dysplasia. I have had two children. Are there normal reasons it could feel this way?

Additionally, I had a negative HPV test five years ago.

Please advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your situation.

It is natural to feel anxious after noticing a change in your cervix, but there are several common reasons why it might not feel completely smooth or symmetrical, especially since you have had two children. Possible normal causes for a bumpy or uneven cervix:

  1. Cervical ectropion (eversion): Soft glandular cells from inside the cervix can extend outward, making one area feel different. This is common after childbirth and hormonal changes.
  2. Nabothian cysts: These harmless, fluid-filled cysts feel like small bumps and are very common.
  3. Scarring from childbirth: Vaginal births can cause natural irregularities or asymmetry as the cervix heals.
  4. Hormonal changes: Pregnancy, birth control, or perimenopause can alter cervical texture over time.
  5. Cervical polyps (usually benign): Small, soft growths on the cervix that are typically harmless and easy to remove.

When to be concerned:

Since your HPV (human papillomavirus) test was negative five years ago, your risk for cervical dysplasia is low, as HPV is the main cause. However, it is important to mention the bump to your doctor if:

  1. It grows larger over time.
  2. You experience unusual bleeding (after sex, between periods, or after menopause).
  3. There is persistent pain, discomfort, or unusual discharge.

Next steps:

  1. Try to stay calm, most cervical changes are harmless.
  2. Keep your upcoming appointment and mention what you felt to your doctor.
  3. If your anxiety becomes overwhelming, consider calling to ask if an earlier appointment is available.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you for using iCliniq. Have a great day!
