Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I underwent a root canal treatment, and had two fillings, and took antibiotic treatment for an abscess a week ago. In the last two days, I have only takenpain relief tablets containing a combination of Codeine and Paracetamol (as I am allergic to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) twice a day. However, yesterday and today, I needed painkillers every four hours, with only one hour of pain-free time. The pain (a cramp-like ache) is in my ear, halfway along my jawline, and down into my neck. For the same complaint, I have a history of taking Amoxicillin as medication. Additionally, I have taken an X-ray. The use of a hot water bottle on the affected area gives some relief from the pain, although I am aware that this is not recommended if there is still an infection present. I have previous issues with my bottom wisdom tooth and the adjacent molar. I am currently using inhalers for my asthma. Will this pain relieve with painkillers, or do I need to go back to my dentist? Kindly help.
Thank you.
Hello,
We welcome you to icliniq family.
I appreciate the confidence that you place in me for your healthcare consultation.
Well, the pain can originate from any of your teeth that are either filled or have undergone root canal treatment. Another possible cause could be a nerve injury that could have occurred during the administration of an anesthetic injection prior to the root canal treatment. Taking painkillers can provide temporary relief. To determine the exact cause and receive effective treatment, you need to undergo a clinical examination by your dentist. In the meantime, continue taking a combination of Codeine and Acetaminophen. For severe pain, I suggest you consider taking other narcotic painkillers such as Tramadol as well. Consult your dentist, discuss with them, and take the medicines with their consent.
I hope this has helped you.
Thank you.
