Can excessive consumption of caffeinated soft drinks result in renal failure?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My uncle drank a lot of caffeinated soft drinks when he was a kid. To relieve his thirst, he even consumes these caffeinated soft drinks. I would like to know if this results in renal failure. If so, what is in these drinks? He is scared now. Because of his concern, he has quit drinking them.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Overuse of any carbonated or synthetic product can be harmful to the body, affecting not just the kidneys but also other organs. Your uncle should get a blood test called a kidney function test (KFT) done to determine the condition of his kidneys. The findings will indicate any damage to the kidney.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
