Can the treatment plan be modified to prevent RA flare-ups?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have had rheumatoid arthritis for a few years now, and I am currently on medication to manage my symptoms. Lately, I have been experiencing more stiffness and joint pain, especially in the mornings, even though I have been taking my medicine regularly. I am worried if my treatment plan needs to be adjusted or if the arthritis is getting worse.

However, I have been working from home via my laptop and have been taking regular breaks to avoid stiffness and pain. So how often should I be getting check-ups, and are there any other treatments or lifestyle changes I should consider to reduce the pain and prevent it from flaring up again?

Please suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

You mentioned that you are suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. It is important to consult your treating doctor, especially if symptoms are worsening, as you may need a treatment adjustment.

Check-ups

Aim for regular check-ups every three to six months, or sooner if needed.

Lifestyle changes

  1. Exercise: Engage in low-impact activities like swimming or walking.

  2. Stretching: Incorporate gentle stretching or yoga.

Here are some suggestions:

  1. Heat and cold therapy: Use heat for muscle relaxation and cold for swelling.

  2. Anti-inflammatory diet: Focus on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats.

  3. Hydration: Stay well-hydrated.

  4. Stress management: Try meditation.

  5. Sleep: Ensure you get enough restful sleep.

  6. Weight management: Maintain a healthy weight.

  7. Physiotherapy might help in better pain management.

Consider discussing with your treating doctor about the various treatment options for RA (rheumatoid arthritis). Always consult them before making any changes.

I hope this has helped you. Please feel free to reach me again, in case of further queries.

Thank you.
