Which eye drops treat eye redness in an 8-year-old child?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My son is 8 years old and has a red eye. There is no pus, no itching, just a very red white of the eye. There is no history of injury to the eyes. He has never had an allergy before. We tried the eye drops Ciprolet, but these drops did not help him.

Please, give me your recommendation about eye drops. What kind of drop should we buy?

Thank you for your answer.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

There are many causes for the redness of eyes mainly allergy, infection, inflammation, and dry eyes.

1. Redness and itching may be due to allergy.

2. Redness, pain, watering, and decreased vision are due to infection.

3. Redness and pain are due to inflammation.

4. Redness and foreign body sensation are due to dryness.

If there is only redness then it may be due to exposure to dust, temperature, or air or the eyes may be red in the morning. Stress may also cause redness. I usually do not suggest medication when there is only redness, you can try the following,

1. Blink a lot

2. Wash your eyes with fresh water

3. Cold compresses

4. Use lubricating eye drops like Flogel.

These measures will help to keep your eyes healthy but it will not have any effect on redness (treating general redness alone is not necessary also). I suggest you should consult your local ophthalmologist for proper examination and treatment.

Thank you.
