Is rectal pain after fistula surgery common in men?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a sailor and have been sailing for the past eight months. I had fistula surgery last year. MRI reports also said that a hernia was detected on the left side. Around one month ago, I started to have a bloating sensation, especially after meals. I consulted a doctor, and he diagnosed it as acid reflux.

He prescribed Omeprazole capsules and one gel and also advised a change in lifestyle and food. After this, it has improved. However, my main concern is that I have a stinging sensation inside the rectum, which is persistent and gets relieved after passing stools in the morning. I am quite afraid of it. I hope you can help me through it.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand you have multiple problems, so I will address them one by one.

Stinging sensation in the rectum - Kindly tell what type of surgery you underwent for the fistula. If it is an open surgery, sometimes it takes a longer time to heal completely. After any surgery, the resultant scarring in the area can cause some discomfort. As long as there is no discharge, swelling, or severe pain, you do not need to worry. You can take laxatives like Lactifiber (Lactitol 10 mg and Ispaghula 3.5 gm) intermittently to avoid constipation.

Hernia - You need to get a planned elective surgery done for that at a convenient time for you.

Acid reflux - As it is improved with medication, you need to continue the medications. If symptoms recur, get an upper GI (gastrointestinal) endoscopy done.

I hope this helps.

Kindly contact me if you have any further queries.

Thanks and regards.
