Is radon exposure a significant risk factor for lung cancer?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I recently discovered that radon exposure is a significant risk factor for lung cancer. I am concerned because I have lived in an area known for high radon levels for several years. I am wondering about the potential long-term effects of this exposure and if there are any specific medical tests or screenings I should consider to monitor my lung health. Additionally, I would like to know if there are any preventive medicines or treatments available to reduce the risk associated with radon exposure. Could you please provide more information on how radon exposure contributes to lung cancer and what steps I can take to protect myself?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

I understand your concern.

Radon is an odorless, invisible, radioactive gas naturally released from rocks, soil, and water. Radon can get into homes and buildings through small cracks or holes and build up in the air. Over time, breathing in high levels of radon can cause lung cancer. Smokers exposed to radon are at greater risk for lung cancer than nonsmokers similarly exposed. Other radon reduction techniques that can be used in any type of home include- sealing, house or room pressurization, heat recovery ventilation, and natural ventilation. Sealing cracks and other openings in the foundation is a basic part of most approaches to radon reduction.

Test to find: Radon Eye RD200 kit.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Regards.
