Is vaccination required if a rabies-affected dog licks?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My dog has been affected by rabies, and the symptoms started yesterday. I got licked on my legs, but I do not know whether it licked the wounded portion. So, should I go for vaccination or not? Last year I took an anti-rabies vaccination.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have reviewed your query, and here is my suggestion. You have already been vaccinated for rabies. You can check your antibody titer against rabies to check whether your vaccination was effective or not. In an already immunized person, it is advisable to take two more doses after exposure. So although you are not sure about licking the wound area, it is suggested to take two more doses and check your titer. I suggest you consult a physician for examination and get vaccinated. Hope I have answered your question. Kind regards.
