Does long-term use of 2.5 mg of the tablet Olanzapine cause tardive dyskinesia or other disorders?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 24-year-old, and I experienced psychosis four years ago. I am taking a maintenance dose of 2.5 mg of Oleanz (olanzapine). I cannot stop taking the drug permanently since I get anxiety and slight delusions after stopping it. I heard long treatment of antipsychotics causes tardive dyskinesia and other movement disorders. Does long-term use of 2.5 mg of Oleanz cause tardive dyskinesia or other disorders? Can I reduce the dose to half of what I am taking? Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The incidence of tardive dyskinesia is close to zero with newer antipsychotics like the drug Oleanz. So the benefit of Oleanz is far more than any possible risk of side effects. So do not worry. Just have regular follow-ups with the treating psychiatrist and regular testing as advised. I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
