This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I saw traces of proteins and ketones in my urine. I am worried and stressed. Please help.

Thanks.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Protein in urine may occur due to various causes like exercise, urine infections, diabetes, or particularly disease related to kidney disease like glomerulonephritis. In your case, to evaluate for any risky situation, kindly tell me if you have any history of diabetes and hypertension.

  1. Do you have swelling in your legs?
  2. Any family history of kidney disease?
  3. Any drug history?
  4. Do you smoke or drink alcohol.?
  5. How much non-vegetarian diet do you take in a week?

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thanks for the reply.

There is no family history of kidney disease and hypertension. I do not smoke.

Thanks.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

So, traces of ketone and proteins may not be a significant finding. Ketone may come in urine in a fasting state, low carbohydrate diet (keto diet), or extreme exercise. This can be explained if you are on the keto diet for weight loss or doing a lot of exercise. Your kidney functions are fine, and you said you do not have a history of hypertension. So I would like you to follow a specific diet. Shift your diet to a whole plant-based diet because, given your weight, you are at risk of diabetes and kidney disease in the future. The non-vegetarian diet increases the acidic load in the blood, which is detrimental to the kidneys and increases the weight. Eat more amount of fruits and vegetables daily. This would help you lose weight and prevent future risks of many diseases. Exercise daily. So, in conclusion, you need to make some lifestyle changes and not get bothered about your report findings. They are insignificant at this moment.

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks.
