Can a patient have pressure in the rectum, blood in the urine, and constipation due to an enlarged prostate?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have had constipation issues and feeling pressure in my rectum for the past ten days. It feels like I need to urinate, but I do not. I thought it was constipation. So, I went to the doctor and got a urine test done. The test showed trace amounts of occult blood. I was given the tablet Magnesium Citrate for constipation. My symptoms have not improved even after taking the laxative. I suspect I have an enlarged prostate, but my urine test showed no bacterial infection. Is this something possibly related to an enlarged prostate?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

From the attached reports (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity), this seems to be chronic prostatitis and not enlarged prostate. Prostatitis can cause rectal symptoms as it is located adjacent to it. Inflammation will cause swelling and some degree of prostatic enlargement. A urine test can be normal as you have non-bacterial prostatitis. I suggest you take the tablet Levofloxacine 500 mg once daily for two weeks, tablet Tamsulosine 0.4 mg once at night for a month, and the tablet Celecoxib 200 mg twice daily for 30 days (consult a specialist doctor, talk with him or her, and take medications with their consent).
