What toothbrushing methods help to maintain oral hygiene?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 35-year-old male. I would like to know the most effective toothbrushing methods to maintain optimal oral hygiene. Could you provide some details on the recommended toothbrushing techniques? Are there particular toothbrush types, bristle softness, or toothpaste features that are more beneficial? I would like to know more in detail about a toothbrush and when it needs time for replacement.

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I am here to help you get the best medical advice.

To maintain proper oral hygiene, I suggest you do the following:

  1. Visit your dentist every six to seven months for scaling and polishing of your teeth.
  2. Brush your anterior and posterior teeth surfaces which are towards the cheek and lips in a circular motion.
  3. Brush the occlusal surface in a horizontal motion.
  4. Brush the lingual surface of your posterior teeth in a vertical or circular motion.
  5. Brush the lingual surface of your anterior teeth in a vertical motion.
  6. You need to brush all the surfaces of your teeth to maintain proper oral hygiene.
  7. Brush your teeth both in the morning and at night.
  8. Floss the interdental areas of your teeth. You can use an interdental brush and a floss.
  9. If you see any black spots on your teeth go for restoration or filling of your teeth so that caries do not proceed to the pulpal zone.

I wish you good health.

Do get back in case of any further queries.

Thank you.
