How to manage pricking sensation in eyes?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have this pricking sensation in my right eye and I am using refresh tears. When using the drops my eyes are fine for some time and again I have this sensation. There is no pain just a pricking sensation.

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Since you have had dry eyes before and are using Refresh (Carboxymethylcellulose) tears, the pricking sensation is likely due to persistent dryness or irritation. Possible causes:

  1. Dry eye syndrome – If your eyes do not produce enough tears or the tear film evaporates quickly, discomfort returns after drops wear off.
  2. Allergies or environmental irritants – Dust, wind, or screen exposure can worsen symptoms.
  3. Meibomian gland dysfunction – If your oil glands are blocked, tears evaporate too fast.
  4. Eye strain – Long hours on screens can reduce blinking and worsen dryness.
  5. Mild corneal irritation – A minor scratch or foreign particle could cause pricking.

What you can do:

  1. Increase artificial tears usage – Instead of only using Refresh Tears when needed, try using them four to six times daily for better hydration.
  2. Use gel-based drops at night – Thicker lubricants last longer.
  3. Follow the 20-20-20 Rule – If using screens, take breaks every 20 minutes.
  4. Apply warm compresses – Helps unclog oil glands and improves tear quality.
  5. Use a humidifier – Dry air can make symptoms worse.

When to see a doctor:

  1. If the pricking sensation worsens or persists despite frequent lubrication.
  2. If you notice redness, light sensitivity, or blurry vision.
  3. If your eyes feel gritty or painful, as it may indicate a more severe dry eye condition.

Would you like recommendations for specific gel drops or eye supplements to improve long-term eye moisture?

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks.
