Is Listeria same as food poisoning?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been having severe vomiting for a while now. I traveled from one country to another country, and the problem continues. Could this be related to a disease outbreak? I heard something about Listeria that might cause listeriosis. Is this the same as food poisoning? I read somewhere about the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention saying something about it, but I am not sure if it applies to me. Can someone help explain what this means in simpler terms?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern. This could be a travel-related illness caused by changes in the environment, food, or water. Please make sure to get proper treatment, as these conditions are common during travel. Let me know if you have experienced any other symptoms, such as diarrhea with vomiting or just vomiting. Also, share how long ago you traveled and whether the symptoms appeared during the trip or after returning home, along with any signs of cough or fever.

In the early stages of travel sickness, vomiting, and diarrhea are typical. It is important to take the right medications, such as antibiotics, anti-nausea drugs, and oral rehydration solutions. Do not worry too much about serious infections like listeria just focus on getting the appropriate treatment.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

Take care.

Thank you.
