How to treat pregnancy-related respiratory discomfort?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 27-year-old female, and I am pregnant. I have had a severe dry cough for the past four weeks. At night it gets worse and harder for me to breathe. What can be the cause?

Please suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Well, there is nothing to worry about a dry cough during pregnancy because it is normal. There are various causes for dry cough during pregnancy, like allergies, asthma, bronchospasm, rhinitis of pregnancy, heartburn, or a weakened immune system.

A few things that can help you are:

  1. You can soothe your dry cough symptoms by drinking plenty of lukewarm water.
  2. While you go to bed, try to sleep in an elevated position by elevating your head with pillows.
  3. Also, you can go for honey.
  4. Take orange juice as it will boost your immune system.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
