Is there a pregnancy risk from semen touching the vagina?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

How to be sure that you are not pregnant? I had my last period cycle at the beginning of the last month. Now I am waiting for this month. I did not have sex; it was just fingering, but I am scared that the semen might have had any contact with my vagina.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

If you did not have any sexual contact (vaginal, oral, or anal) that involved penetration or the exchange of bodily fluids, such as semen, then it is highly unlikely that you are pregnant. Fingering (digital stimulation) alone is not enough to cause pregnancy. However, it is still possible for pregnancy to occur if there was any pre-ejaculate (pre-cum) present on the penis during fingering. Pre-ejaculate is a clear fluid that is released from the urethra before ejaculation and can contain sperm. If this fluid came into contact with your vagina, there is a small risk of pregnancy.

If you are concerned about this possibility, you may want to consider using barrier methods of contraception, such as condoms or dental dams, during future sexual activity to prevent the exchange of bodily fluids. If you have missed your periods for several weeks and are experiencing symptoms such as nausea, fatigue, or breast tenderness, it is best to take a pregnancy test to confirm whether or not you are pregnant. If the test is negative and you continue to experience irregular periods, it may be helpful to consult with a gynecologist for further evaluation and guidance on how to manage your symptoms.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards.
