Is it possible for a woman to be pregnant even if she has not missed her periods?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had unprotected sex three weeks ago with my girl friend, but I am not certain about her pregnancy status. Her periods have not been missed, and she has not experienced any symptoms like headaches or anything else in these three weeks. Are there any chances of pregnancy? Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern. I would like to inform you that, no one can predict pregnancy based solely on that history. Pregnancy diagnosis is typically done through a Urine Pregnancy test at home, preferably at least one day after the missed period, and not before. Therefore, if you had intercourse at the beginning of your partner's menstrual cycle and three weeks have passed, pregnancy cannot be definitively diagnosed. Each woman may manifest pregnancy with different symptoms. Usually, ovulation in a woman occurs around the 12th to 16th day of her menstrual cycle. The lifespan of an egg is about 24 hours, while sperm can survive for up to 72 hours. With this information, you can estimate the likelihood of pregnancy. The exact day of ovulation is determined based on the duration of your partner's menstrual cycle. For instance, in a regular 28-day cycle, ovulation occurs around day 14, which is 14 days before the expected period. If your partner's cycle is consistently 30 days, ovulation will likely happen on Day 16, and so on. The first day of bleeding marks day one of the menstrual cycle. In cases of irregular cycles, the calculation is as follows:

Longest cycle minus eight, and Longest cycle minus 11 provide the range for ovulation.

For example, if the longest cycle is 34 days and the shortest is 27 days:

34 - 8 = 26

27 - 11 = 16

Thus, ovulation is likely to occur between days 16 to 26 of the cycle. I hope this has helped you. Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.

Thank you.
