Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Can my wife travel on the flight in her eight months of pregnancy?

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

This is a risky situation. Many flights do not allow you to travel after the seventh month. She may be very uncomfortable at high altitudes, with lower air pressure and occasional turbulence. She may enter into preterm labor or leakage if any pain starts, and with no assistance, it is risky to the mother and baby—the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in leg veins due to long sitting in the same position. If the journey is avoidable, it is best. If unavoidable, follow these:

1. Check with flight rules.

2. Call your doctor and ask for medicines to avoid pain in flight.

3. Use smooth, good roads and slow drive to the airport. You do not want her to have pain even before reaching the flight.

4. Screening at the airport is fine.

5. Keep having throughout the journey and keep using the washroom frequently. This will keep her hydrated, and her moving around will reduce the risk of DVT

6. Ask for a seat in the middle row near the wings- so discomfort is less.

7. If possible, ask for seats with more leg space. She can keep moving her legs to reduce the risk of DVT.

8. Avoid heavy, oily, and gas-forming food before the journey.

I hope this information will help.

Thank you.
