Can protected sex and contraceptive pills cause pregnancy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 19-year-old male, and my partner is of the same age. We had protected sex on the 22nd day of her menstrual cycle. We immediately took an I-pill, just to be on the safer side. It was our first time together, so we were nervous. Is there anything we should be worried about getting pregnant? Please advise.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Your first query consult is on us!

I have gone through your history, and understand your concern.

Menstrual irregularities, in your case, could be due to hormonal imbalance caused by an I-pill (contraceptive pill). As you took the I-pill on time, there is almost no chance of pregnancy in your case. The abdominal pain with white discharge could be due to side effects of the I-pill. So, there is no need to worry about it. Some people have withdrawal bleeding (an expected effect of some forms of hormonal birth control pills) also due to the sudden withdrawal of hormones from your body.

The next period will be a little unpredictable due to hormonal imbalances caused by the I-pill. It may either come early or be delayed by one week or so. So wait and watch for your menses; get your home urine pregnancy test after seven days of your missed period date to rule out pregnancy.

I hope that you get your answer.

Please let me know if you want some help.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thanks for your reply.

There is no menstrual irregularity; it is just that we had protected sex on the 22nd day of her current ongoing cycle, and we took an I-pill immediately after it. Should we worry about the chance of pregnancy? Please advise.

Thank you.
