How to use home pregnancy test kits?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My wife, who is 23 years old, has missed her periods. There is a delay of 15 days. We have gone for a home pregnancy test but are unsure how to understand the results.

Kindly guide.

Answered by Dr. Reetika

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern and would be happy to help. I have checked the image of the home pregnancy test results you shared (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity). The results are slightly unclear and show non-pregnant. However, the urine pregnancy test accuracy is based on three important factors. Firstly, after how many days of conception or unprotected intercourse the test has been done; secondly, the correctness of the procedure in doing the test; and thirdly, the correctness of the kit.

Kindly let me know when did the intercourse happen? How many days later have you done the test? Could you adhere to all guidelines of the pregnancy test kit, especially the timing part, to check the result?

Suppose it is already two weeks since the intercourse. In that case, I suggest you get a blood hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) test done at any nearby laboratory or repeat the urine pregnancy test with the first urine of the day tomorrow morning. Also, do not drink too much fluid before the test and adhere to all guidelines written on the package of the pregnancy test kit.

I hope this helps.

Feel free to ask any additional questions or information.

God bless.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your response.

The last time we had sex was about two months back. Can a delay in periods occur due to any other health issues?

Kindly advise.

Answered by Dr. Reetika

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Yes, delay in periods could also be due to other health issues. To rule out pregnancy, I suggest your wife repeat the urine pregnancy test with an early morning urine sample.I suggest your wife to repeat the urine pregnancy test with an early morning urine sample.
