Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
Can Lamotrigine cause a negative pregnancy test and decrease hcg levels? I am experiencing symptoms of pregnancy but urine-based pregnancy tests are all negative.
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
Lamotrigine (Lamictal) and Fluoxetine (Prozac) are not known to directly lower hCG levels or cause false-negative pregnancy tests. However, there are other reasons you might be experiencing pregnancy symptoms despite negative urine tests:
Possible explanations:
Testing too early – If implantation has not occurred yet or hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) levels are still low, urine tests might not detect pregnancy. Blood tests are more sensitive.
Diluted urine – If you drink a lot of fluids before testing, hCG concentration might be too low for detection.
Irregular ovulation or periods – Hormonal imbalances (including those influenced by medications) can mimic pregnancy symptoms.
Ectopic pregnancy or molar pregnancy – These conditions may cause symptoms but sometimes show low or undetectable hCG in urine.
Side effects of medications – Lamotrigine and Fluoxetine can cause symptoms like nausea, fatigue, and breast tenderness, which might be mistaken for pregnancy.
Next steps:
Consider a blood hCG test – It is more accurate than urine tests.
Consult your doctor – They can check for pregnancy or other possible causes of your symptoms.
I hope this helps.
Take care.
