Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 55-year-old male with adult polycystic kidney disease. Recently, I visited a nephrologist who prescribed Tolvaptan (diuretic) 15 milligrams. My blood pressure is normal, and I am currently taking medication for it. I have had two heart stents placed and have been using heart medication for the past 16 years. Could you please advise me if the medication I am using for my kidney cysts is appropriate?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
I understand your concern regarding ADPKD (adult polycystic kidney disease) and its treatment. ADPKD is a genetic condition, and the main management strategies include dietary modifications and blood pressure control. Recommendations for managing ADPKD include a low-salt diet, increasing fluid intake (around 2.5 liters per day), and reducing or avoiding coffee, alcohol, and smoking. Blood pressure should be maintained below 130/80 mmHg.
The only drug approved for ADPKD is Tolvaptan, but it is typically prescribed at much higher doses. At this stage, you should primarily focus on the dietary modifications mentioned. An MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) of the kidneys should be done to assess whether Tolvaptan is necessary.
I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at icliniq.
Thank you.
