What does a low platelet count suggest?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My son is seventeen years old. Recently, he was diagnosed with a low platelet count in his blood. To start, I would greatly appreciate your insights into the role of platelets in the body. Could you provide an explanation of what platelets are, how they are produced, and their vital function in the blood clotting process? Furthermore, I am curious about the factors that affect platelet count and function. Are there medical conditions or lifestyle choices that could lead to abnormal platelet counts? How do one's diet, exercise routine, and overall health influence the performance of platelets in the body? What are the symptoms or risks associated with thrombocytopenia (low platelet count)? How is it managed?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understood your concern.

Platelets are one of the components of blood. They are produced inside bone marrow. They help in blood clotting which is important in bleeding during injury. They help in making a clot around the injury site and stop bleeding.

There are some genetic conditions as well as some illnesses where platelets quantity or quality are affected such as in viral infections, bone marrow diseases, etc. A good diet and a healthy lifestyle are helpful in overall good health.

Thrombocytopenia causes low platelets and the patient can have bleeding due to injury.

Generally, we treat the disease that causes thrombocytopenia. Consult your doctor immediately.

I hope it helps.

Thanks and regards.
