How long does it take to cure tinea versicolor?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had tinea versicolor on my right shoulder for the last few months, and I was on medication with Miconazole ointment for the same. Still, the white patches have not disappeared. What is the reason for it, and how long does it take to cure? Are there any complications?

Answered by Dr. Suvash Sahu

Hello,

Welcome to iclinq.com.

I have read your query, and it seems like you are suffering from pityriasis versicolor. It is a fungal infection due to Malassezia furfur. Apply KZ (Ketoconazole) cream twice daily. Take tablet Fluconazole 450 mg single dose. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with them and take medications with their consent. Apply Abzorb (Clotrimazole) powder whenever it gets wet by sweat after drying with a clean cloth. Use 2 % Ketoconazole shampoo, apply over the affected area, leave it for five to ten minutes, then take a bath on alternate days. It is recurrent and may take five to six months to get the pigmentation normalized. Get a review after four weeks.

Thank you.
