Is a pink fluidy appearance in the corners of the eyes a sign of eye infection?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am having a tissue or fluidy appearance in the outer corner of both eyes. It is pink in color. I noticed it a few months ago and I do not remember it being like this since childhood. I will attach an image for better understanding. Please suggest me a treatment for it.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and seen the image that you have attached (attachement removed to protect the patient's identity). The abnormal appearance in your eye can be due to two reasons .Firstly, it could be an enlarged lacrimal sac (dacryoadenitis). This is usually associated with benign inflammatory reactions in the body and it varies in size and can be mild to moderately painful. This will need further evaluation by an ophthalmologist. Secondly, it could be a rare syndrome known as Kabuki eye syndrome. This is usually associated with other congenital diseases of the airways and the liver. This would be picked up usually at birth, so it is less likely that you have this disease. So do not worry and kindly visit an ophthalmologist in case you encounter the following symptoms, An increase in the size of the swelling, or if pain develops in the area of the swelling. Difficulty in seeing clearly, pain on moving the eyes, or problems with color vision. In case you develop frequent high fever and are experiencing significant weight loss. I hope this helped you out. Thanks and regards.
