Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a teenage girl. I have a problem where, whenever I see or hear something related to blood, I faint shortly after. It started in my childhood. Is it curable? Will it cause any problems in my future life?
Kindly advise.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
People have specific fears that make them feel uncomfortable in certain situations. For some people, these fears are stronger and are called phobias. In such situations, a person's blood pressure first increases and then suddenly drops, which can cause them to faint. This is called a vasovagal response. First, you need to learn how to handle this kind of emergency!
When you feel like you are going to faint, lie down immediately and raise your feet. This will help prevent you from losing consciousness. Another technique to prevent the sudden drop in blood pressure is to sit on a chair or similar surface and tense your body muscles for 15 seconds. Then relax for 30 seconds. Repeat this up to five times. This technique helps maintain adequate blood pressure so you do not faint. The solution to overcoming this fear is to desensitize yourself. This can be done by gradually telling yourself that nothing bad will happen if you hear or see what triggers your phobia. If you expose yourself to the trigger repeatedly, over time, it may stop affecting you. Sometimes, the help of a psychologist is needed to make this process easier.
I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.
Thank you.
