What causes pain and swelling around the impacted tooth?

Hello doctor,

I have an impacted wisdom tooth. Two days ago, the gum over the top of the tooth started to swell. I have tried rinsing it with salt water. Also, I have been brushing and flossing well. However, the swelling has not subsided and has also led to tender lymph nodes under my jaw, due to which I have discomfort during swallowing.

Kindly help.

I understand your concern and would be happy to help. You have a superficial infection of the gum over the wisdom tooth, called pericoronitis. I suggest you follow the below treatment plan:

Tablet Amoxicillin and Clavulanic Acid 625 mg thrice daily for five days.
Tablet containing Aceclofenac 100 mg, Paracetamol 325 mg, and Serratiopeptidase 15 mg twice daily for five days.

Mouthwash containing Hydrogen peroxide for gargling three times a day for five days.

After the symptoms subside, I suggest you take an X-ray, after which the doctor can take a final call on the treatment plan.
