Is my left testicular swelling after a workout a hydrocele?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I underwent surgery for testicular swelling on the right side three months ago; they say it was a hydrocele. Now I have similar swelling in my left side after I did a heavy workout. However, it is decreasing when I am sleeping, which did not happen last time.

Please advise.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

From your history, I understand you might have developed an inguinal hernia, as it has occurred after lifting heavy weights, which is totally different from your previous diagnosis of hydrocele.

Here, due to lifting heavy weights, the contents from your abdomen, mostly intestines or omentum, have descended into the scrotum. As you have said, it reduces when lying down. I think you are at an early stage with an uncomplicated hernia, which can be reduced. I suggest you stop lifting heavy weights immediately. Avoid constipation by all means by having a diet with high fiber and taking plenty of water.

You will need surgery in the near future to treat your hernia. At this stage, it is not an emergency, but getting it operated on at the earliest is the best advice I can give you.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
