Which medications would help a person overcome patchy hair loss?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have problems with my hair. I am losing my hair in six spots. I consulted the doctor. He suggested me a gel, but it is not working. He told me that it was due to some white blood cell activity. Can you suggest me a medicine?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

With your description, it seems you have alopecia areata. Alopecia areata is a nonscarring type of hair loss that can affect any hair-bearing area and manifest in many different patterns. It can affect any hair-bearing area. The frequency of involvement at particular sites is as follows:

  1. Scalp - 66.8 to 95 %.
  2. Beard - 28 % of males.

Associated conditions may include the following:

  1. Thyroid disease.
  2. Anxiety.
  3. Stressful life events in the six months before onset.

I suggest you inject Triamcinolone Acetonide 5mg/ml over the scalp once for three weeks. The injection should be given by a dermatologist only. You can also try Fluocinolone Acetonide cream, 0.2 % in the morning, and 0.03 % Tacrolimus cream at night for a month after consulting your doctor.
