What is the connection between Tourette's syndrome, Parkinson’s disease, and OCD?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My grandfather has Parkinson’s disease and OCD. His behavior has become unusual. Some people believe my grandad got Tourette's syndrome. I am confused about whether there is a link between deep brain stimulation, Tourette's syndrome, Parkinson's disease, and OCD. What are the available treatments for these conditions? Could you please explain it to me? Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Please consider that Parkinsonian syndrome, which means having rigidity and slowness in movements with or without tremors, is the cardinal sign of various movement disorders, including the famous Parkinson's disease, corticobasal degeneration (a rare disease that leads to shrinking in areas of the brain), and multiple system atrophy (an uncommon nervous system disorder that progressively destroys brain nerve cells).

Without a clinical examination, seeing the brain imaging, and knowing more details about the course of the disease, I am not sure which Parkinsonism syndrome your grandfather may suffer from. However, all of them share neurodegeneration. It means that progressive brain cell loss occurs in all of them.

In the process of neurodegeneration, many behavioral signs may occur. For example, a gentle person may start aggressive behavior. Their usual manners and beliefs might change. Therefore, OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder) might be seen in a previously normal person. The memory could also be impacted. In some cases, psychotic problems may be present.

Accordingly, the changes that you see in the manner and speech of your grandfather can be related to the progression of his disease. Therefore, I recommend you consult with his neurologist. Moreover, a review of his medication is necessary when behavioral changes are seen.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards.
