What do palpitations after aerobic exercises suggest?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I overdid aerobic exercises yesterday for 90 minutes after a long gap. After some time, I felt continuous palpitations. Should I be worried?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query and understand your concern. Count your pulse rate if it is more than 100 bpm or is irregular persistently, get an ECG (electrocardiogram) done. ECG will record heart rhythm whether it is normal or abnormal. Do you have any cardiac disease? Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I do not know if I have any cardiac disease. My pulse rate is in the 70 to 80 bpm range. Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The unusual awareness of one's own heartbeats is called palpitations. Palpitations may occur due to various reasons. The reasons are fast heart rate (many causes), slower heart rate (many causes), irregular heart rate (many causes), being overcautious about heartbeats, and certain thin, lean patients can feel their heartbeats, especially in a recumbent position, which is normal. My advice: Avoid being overcautious about it. Regular aerobic exercise will condition the heart, and palpitations will go away over time. If you feel palpitations, just relax, count your pulse rate, and assess regularity. If the rate is more than 100 at rest or irregular, get an ECG (electrocardiogram) done.

Thank you.
