Do weight loss tablets have any risks or side effects?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been dealing with some serious weight issues lately. At the age of 32, I am tipping the scales at over 280 pounds, and it is starting to take a toll on me. I am only 5 feet 5 inches tall, and the joint pains and heaviness are getting unbearable. I have decided to buckle down and start a diet and workout plan, but I know it is going to be tough. I was wondering if there are any safe weight loss tablets I can take to give me a little boost in shedding these extra pounds. I have heard about anti-obesity medications, but I am not sure if they are right for me. Are there any risks or side effects I should be aware of?

Answer:

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

It is appreciable that you have decided to plan for a workout and diet. Here are some tips:

  1. Count your calories.

  1. Take X grams of protein to your X kg of weight (if you have 70 kilograms weight, take about 70 grams of protein per day).

  1. Avoid processed foods.

  1. Avoid added sugars.

As you asked, yes there are some weight loss medicines. Since your BMI (body mass index) is more than 30, you can take the tablet Orlistat 120 mg with lunch for a month. This will assist you with weight loss along with diet and exercise. If you are allergic to this medicine, you should avoid these. Like all other allopathic medicines, this too has side effects including, dry mouth, fatigue, headache, and abdominal discomfort. It works by reducing the absorption of fat from your gut. so, you can avoid abdominal discomfort by avoiding more fats.

If you are using vitamin A, D, E, and K supplements, their effect might be reduced due to Orlistat. So, consider that too.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.

Regards.
